The Mentor

October and November 2008

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Dutch Jazz Orchestra, the band will tour a number of theatres and festivals, under the auspices of Jazz Impuls. The program will give an overview of 25 years Dutch Jazz Orchestra with special focus on its most memorable CD productions: those that have featured the work of Billy Strayhorn, Mary Lou Williams. The new CDs featuring Gil Evans and Gerry Mulligan works as well as the double-CD that celebrates Rob Madna are to be presented.

Fall 2007

The orchestra is scheduled to record a multi-CD production with about 32 compositions and arrangements of pianist-composer Rob Madna. This project has been under study for quite some time. From 2004 a taskforce with Astrid and Arthur Madna, Harm Mobach, Wim Minnaar and Albert Beltman has been working to locate and restore Rob Madna’s music. Works that were believed to be lost could be traced back (often through fellow musicians and students who had made copies for study). Hence a work commissioned in 1978 by the Johan Wagenaar Stichting, was retrieved.
Furthermore, two scores written for the legendary Boy Edgar in 1962 surfaced. Musicologist Hans Bel located recordings with Madna as piano-soloist at the Dutch Jazz Archives. These two orchestral scores may very well be the first ever written by Madna.
